They want a flawless event. They say it with real feeling, as if flawless is the highest standard an event can reach, and I understand what they mean. They mean nothing went wrong, nothing was awkward, nobody noticed a problem. They mean seamless.

I’ve learned to push back on “flawless.” Not because I don’t care about execution, I care about it deeply. The invisible work, all of it, exists in service of things running well. I have spent a career learning how to keep problems from reaching guests. What I push back on is the idea that an event without visible problems is the best version of an event because I don’t think that’s always true.

Flawless implies control. It implies that the goal was to remove every variable, smooth every edge, and sand down every moment that didn’t go exactly according to plan.

But the moments that don’t go according to plan are sometimes the ones people remember the most. The speech that went off script and made the whole room cry. The conversation between two guests that kept a table going until midnight. The moment the original plan fell apart and something better happened instead.

These things happen because there is life in the room. Because the event was designed well enough to hold people, but not so tightly controlled that there was no room for anything unexpected.

The best events I’ve produced were not flawless, they were alive, with room to breathe.

The distinction matters because the pursuit of “flawless” can work against the thing events are actually for. Over-producing, over-programming, managing every moment leaves no room for guests to be present. The event becomes a performance they watch rather than an experience they’re inside.

What I aim for instead of flawless is coherent. The event should know what it is, and every choice should serve that. When something goes wrong, and something always goes wrong, it should be invisible, not because it was prevented, but because the team knew how to hold it without breaking the room.

There is a kind of competence that only shows itself when things go sideways. It is calmer and more useful than flawless.

And the guests, the ones who felt that something in the evening was exactly right, will never know the difference.

When I started in this industry, I thought events were about the experience: the design, the food, the production value. The way a room looked when guests walked in. I cared about craft, and I worked hard at it, and I believed that if the experience was exceptional, the event was a success.

I still believe in craft. I still think the details matter more than most people give them credit for. But I’ve changed my mind about what events are fundamentally for. I don’t think people gather for the experience, I think people gather for each other.

The experience is the container. The design and the production and the room. The container matters enormously, because a well-made container creates conditions for people to be fully present with each other. A poorly made container gets in the way.

But the container is not the point. The point is what happens between people when they are placed in the same room at the same time and given permission to be there together.

I’ve seen expensive, beautifully produced events where nothing really happened. People were polite, the food was excellent, and everyone went home roughly the same as they arrived. The experience was there, but the connection wasn’t.

I’ve also been at simpler events, less polished, smaller budgets, where something impactful occurred. A conversation that changed a relationship. A recognition between two people who’d been in the same industry for years and finally met. A moment where the whole room shared something and everyone felt it. Those are the events I remember most.

What I’ve come to believe is that my job is to create conditions where connection can happen, not just produce an event. The design and the logistics and the production are all in service of that connection. This changes how I talk to clients about what they’re building.

I ask about people now more than I ask about details. Who is in the room? What do they share? What do they need from this gathering that they can’t get from a screen? What would it mean for them to leave knowing something they didn’t know when they arrived?

Twenty years ago, I would have started with the room. Now, I start with the people in it.

Not physically. I am still there, watching the room, adjusting the timeline, making decisions that no one will know were ever decisions. But in that moment, if the evening is going the way it should, I am invisible to the people inside it.

That is the goal.

Most people who have never planned an event understand it as a series of choices. Flowers. Music. Catering. Venue. They understand it as visible things assembled into an experience, and that part is true. But the part that doesn’t get talked about, the part that separates a good event from a great one, is everything that happens so that none of those visible things ever feel like effort.

I call it “the invisible work.”

It’s the vendor call at 9 p.m. the week before, when something falls through and you have two hours to solve a problem the client will never hear about. It’s the walk-through you do on the morning of, not to check boxes, but to notice what the space feels like when it’s empty so you can anticipate how it will feel when it’s full. It’s the judgment call you make in the middle of a reception when the energy shifts and you have 30 seconds to decide whether to adjust the music, move the timeline, or simply hold steady.

These decisions don’t live in the contract. They don’t show up on an invoice. They’re made in real time, by someone who has learned through years of practice how to read a room.

That kind of knowledge isn’t teachable in the traditional sense.

You can learn the logistics of event planning in a course. You can study vendors, contracts, timelines. You can follow the formulas and execute them correctly. What you cannot learn from a course is what to do when something goes sideways in front of two hundred people, and your job is to make sure none of them notice.

That’s learned through experience. Through repetition. Through the accumulation of situations that pushed you past what you knew and required you to find something more.

The invisible work is also the emotional intelligence that shapes every interaction before, during, and after an event. It’s knowing when a client needs to be told the truth they don’t want to hear, and how to deliver it. It’s understanding that whoever is across the table from you isn’t just planning an event. They are carrying something: a milestone, a mission, a moment their organization has been building toward. Your job is not just to execute their vision. It’s to hold it with care.

I don’t say this to make the work sound more mysterious than it is. I say it because I think the industry sometimes undervalues the part of planning that doesn’t photograph well.

The beautiful tablescape will show up on Instagram. The florals will be tagged. The venue will get mentioned.

What you won’t see is the 6am setup call that made sure the florals arrived in the right order. The dry run of the dinner service that caught the timing issue before it became a problem. The conversation with the banquet manager that set the tone for the whole staff.

Those are the things that made the event feel effortless.

Effortless isn’t an accident. It’s the result of the work no one sees.

They arrive at the first meeting with a folder filled with inspiration images, a color palette, a venue already on hold, a caterer their colleague used two years ago, and sometimes more. They have a vision, and the vision is detailed, and they are excited about it.

These clients are not difficult because they have opinions. Opinions are useful. They are challenging because the presence of a complete vision can make it harder to ask whether the vision is right.

My job is not to simply execute a plan. It’s to produce an experience. And sometimes those two things require different conversations.

When I work with a client who comes in with everything decided, the question I have to answer early is: where did this vision come from, and does it actually fit what they’re trying to do?

Sometimes the answer is yes. The vision is specific to this client and this moment, and my role is to bring craft and judgment to the execution. That is a good engagement.

But sometimes the vision is borrowed. It came from someone else’s event or a folder of saved images that accumulated over a few years. It’s beautiful in the abstract but not specific to what this particular gathering needs to do.

In those cases, the most useful thing I can offer is a better question. Not “have you considered a different color palette.” Something more fundamental: what do you want people to walk away feeling? Does this vision produce that feeling?

Sometimes this conversation is welcome. The client had been hoping someone would help them examine the plan they’d been carrying, and they feel relieved when someone asks. Sometimes it isn’t, and I’ve learned to read the difference so I know what to expect.

But even with the most certain client, I hold onto the belief that my value is not just in executing what they bring me. It’s in bringing something they didn’t know to ask for.

The clients who come in with everything decided teach me this more than anyone: a complete plan and a clear intention are not the same thing. The most important thing I can do in that first meeting is find out which one they have.

Most clients find a venue and then build an event around it.

They fall in love with a space, the light in the afternoon, the exposed beams, the courtyard. They picture their event inside it, and the picture feels right, and they sign on the dotted line.

I understand how and why this happens. Venues are often the most tangible part of the planning process. You can walk into a room and feel it in a way you can’t feel a timeline or a vendor contract. But this is also how events can end up slightly wrong in ways that are hard to diagnose.

The question clients almost never ask before booking a venue is: what does this space require of an event?

Every venue has a personality. Some rooms are formal by nature and will resist casual decor and styling. Some spaces are intimate and will swallow large-scale production. Some venues have so much character of their own that the event has to either work with that character or spend significant resources working against it.

When a client falls in love with a space before they’ve asked what that space needs, they’re starting with an answer before they’ve asked the question.

Sometimes those two things align perfectly. The event they envisioned fits the room they chose, and the planning process flows from there.

More often, there is a gap. The venue is beautiful but built for a different kind of energy than the event requires. The ceiling is too high for an intimate dinner. The flow is wrong for cocktail-style programming. The load-in logistics add four hours to setup that nobody budgeted for.

These are solvable problems. Everything is solvable. But solving them costs money, time, and sometimes the coherence of the event itself.

The approach I always recommend: start with what the event needs to do, then find the venue that enables it.

What kind of energy are you building? How many guests, and how do you want them to move through the space? Is the meal seated or flowing? Does the programming require a stage, a dance floor, a place for guests to step away for a moment? What does arrival need to feel like?

Answer those questions first. Then go look at venues.

The right room for your event exists. But you have to know what you're looking for before you'll recognize it.

Share The Art of Celebration

There is a conversation I have on almost every project.

The client has a budget. The budget is real, and it has edges. We’re making decisions about where to spend and where to pull back. And at some point, we get to lighting.

This is when I stop being agreeable.

Lighting is the single highest-leverage design decision in any event. It affects everything else: how the room reads, how the florals look, how people’s faces look, how the food photographs, how the whole evening feels. A room with exceptional production value and bad lighting will underperform. A modest room with considered lighting can feel extraordinary.

Most clients don’t feel this until they’re standing in the room and the lights go on.

That’s the problem. It’s invisible in the planning phase and unmistakable on the day of.

Guests don’t talk about lighting. They have no language for it. But they feel it completely. A room lit at the wrong temperature makes people tired without knowing why. Overheads that hit the ceiling instead of the faces make a space feel institutional, no matter how beautiful the table is. The right light on a linen does more for a dinner’s atmosphere than almost anything placed on top of it.

When I fight for the lighting budget, I’m not fighting for a production line item. I’m fighting for the room’s ability to do its job.

The florist will tell you the florals are the most important visual element. The caterer will tell you the food changes everything. The venue will tell you the bones of the space speak for themselves. All of that is true. But none of it performs the way it should in bad light. And because many site visits take place during the daylight hours, it can be really difficult for clients to visualize how much things will change once darkness falls. They can end up discounting how important the right lighting really is.

I have walked into venues hours before an event where everything looked flat and a little sad. The tables were set, the florals were beautiful, the room was technically ready. Then the lighting came on. Not because it was magic, but because someone had made deliberate choices about color temperature and direction and intensity, and the whole room came into focus.

That transformation is not decorative. It is the difference between a room that performs and a room that doesn’t.

Most clients think a site visit is about checking boxes.

Capacity. Layout. Load-in access. Natural light. These things matter, and I look at all of them. But the reason I insist on walking a space in person, before anything is signed, is not about the checklist.

It’s about how the room feels when it’s empty.

That’s the thing no photo shows you. You can see a venue on Instagram or a website and understand it visually. What you can’t understand until you’re standing in it is the quality of the air, the scale of the ceiling relative to the floor, the way sound behaves, the direction the natural light is moving.

These are the things that will determine whether the evening feels expansive or cramped, whether guests feel settled or on edge, whether the energy in the room is working with you or against you. A room communicates, but most people don’t know how to hear it.

The first thing I notice when I walk a venue is temperature, not of the air but of the space itself. Some rooms are warm by nature. The materials, the proportions, the history built into the walls. Others are cool, and I don’t mean that as a flaw. Cool spaces can be made warm. But you have to know what you’re starting with.

The second thing I look for is acoustics. Not technical measurements, just whether the room holds sound or throws it. A room that throws sound creates a particular kind of energy: louder, more fragmented, harder to settle. A room that holds sound makes people feel like they’re inside something together. The choice of venue is also a choice about how guests will experience each other.

Then I look for the natural organizing principle. Every room has one, though it’s not always obvious. A fireplace. A view. A natural threshold between spaces. I’m looking for where people will instinctively gather, where conversation will pool, where the room wants the focal point to be. Good design works with that instinct. Fighting it costs more than money.

The last thing I do, before I leave, is stand in the center of the room and stay still for a moment.

I’m not measuring anything. I’m just trying to understand what it feels like to be in this space. Whether it asks something of you or offers something to you. Whether it feels like a room that’s waiting or a room that’s ready.

That’s what a walkthrough gives you that a floor plan never will.

The event doesn’t happen on paper. It happens here. And the room is always the first collaborator.

Sometimes I feel that the word ‘celebration’ gets used loosely.

It gets attached to anything with a guest list: A birthday, a launch, a retirement, a team dinner. These things are called celebrations reflexively, as if the category is just “event with people attending.”

But I don’t think that’s what a celebration is, not really.

A party is a gathering designed to be enjoyable, and there is nothing wrong with that. Some of the best events I’ve ever attended were parties. The energy was right, the room was full, and people went home happy.

But a celebration is something different.

A celebration is a gathering designed to mark something, to declare it. To say: this happened, and we are here together because it matters. There is a difference between a room full of people having a good time and a room full of people who know why they are there.

That difference is the whole job.

I’ve worked on events that looked beautiful and ran smoothly and, by every external measure, were successful, and I’ve walked away from them with the feeling that something was missing. Not a vendor problem or a production issue, something in the intention. The gathering didn’t know what it was for.

The best events I’ve been part of had something you could feel in the room. A shared understanding of the moment. It didn’t matter whether it was a gala for 500 or a dinner for 20. The people in the room knew why they were there, and that knowledge changed how the evening felt.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through design.

When I ask clients early in the process what they want people to feel when they leave, I’m trying to understand whether they’re planning a party or a celebration. Both are valid, but only one of them requires a conversation about meaning before it requires a conversation about florals.

Most people skip over that conversation completely. They go straight to logistics because logistics feel manageable. They choose the venue and build the guest list and select the menu, and the event takes shape around those choices. And sometimes it’s great. Sometimes a beautiful room full of the right people produces exactly the feeling everyone was hoping for.

But more often, the events that land, the ones people talk about afterward, the ones where something shifted in the room, started with someone asking: what are we actually trying to do here?

The word ‘celebration’ should require an answer to that question.

I’m not suggesting every event needs an agenda, but the ones I’m most proud of were the ones where the client and I agreed, before anything else, on what the gathering was for. Not just what it would look like, but what it would mean.

When I meet with a new client, the question I ask first is not about budget. It’s not about the venue or date or headcount.

The first question I ask is this: What do you want people to feel when they walk out the door?

I have been asking some version of this question for twenty years, and the answers still surprise me.

Most clients have never been asked it before. They’ve been asked what they want the event to look like. They’ve been handed questionnaires about florals and catering preferences and timeline logistics. But the question of what the event is designed to produce emotionally, most people haven’t been invited to go there.

When I ask, there’s usually a pause.

And then something changes in the conversation.

A couple planning a wedding will say something like, “We want people to feel like they really know us.” A nonprofit will say they want their donors to leave feeling like the work is possible, not just important. A company planning an off-site will say, maybe with some hesitation, that they want their team to feel proud of where they work.

These are not small answers. They are, in many cases, the most honest thing a client will tell me for months.

Once I have that answer, everything else we do is in service of it.

The design choices aren’t arbitrary after that. The music isn’t decoration. The pacing of the evening isn’t just a timeline. It’s a tool for creating the emotional arc that leads to that feeling at the end of the night.

This is why I think of my work less as event planning and more as experience design.

An event planner executes. An experiential designer asks why, and keeps asking, until the why is so clear that every decision in service of it becomes obvious.

I’ve worked with clients who came to me with very specific ideas about what they wanted. The florals, the venue, the aesthetic. They had a detailed vision. And sometimes those details were exactly right, and my job was to help them execute with excellence.

But more often, the most powerful part of my work happens before a single vendor is called. It happens in a conversation where I ask a client what they’re really hoping for, not just what they want the event to look like, but what they need it to do.

Those conversations are harder. They require a client to slow down, to move past the logistics, to trust that someone else can hold the vision while they go deeper into it.

Not every client is ready for that. But the ones who are, those are the events I’m most proud of.

The first question is always the most important one.

It’s also the one that no checklist will ever teach you to ask.

When I walk into a venue for the first time with a new client, they usually want to talk about the room.

The ceiling height. The natural light. The layout. All of it matters. But if I’m being honest about where my attention goes first, it goes to the table.

Not the table as furniture. The table as intention.

A table communicates everything. How many people are expected to feel like they belong to something together. How formal or informal the evening wants to be. Whether the energy is meant to flow or settle. Whether this is a celebration of arrival or an invitation to stay.

Before a single chair is placed, the table has already made a series of decisions about the experience.

A good table does not announce itself. That is the first thing to understand about it. When the design is right, guests don’t look at the table and think about the choices that were made. They sit down, and something settles. They feel taken care of in a way they couldn’t fully explain.

That response is not accidental. It is the result of a series of decisions that worked together well enough to disappear.

I have been setting tables, in one form or another, for more than twenty years. And the thing I’ve come to believe is that a table is not decor. It is an environment. Every guest who sits down spends the next several hours in relationship with that specific arrangement of objects, textures, and light. The table is closer to architecture than it is to styling.

That distinction changes how I approach it.

I have always believed that the most important design work in an event happens below the sightline. Not the floral installation overhead, though I love a beautiful installation, but the surface directly in front of each guest. The texture of the linen. The weight of the plate. The placement of the glass. The distance between settings.

These are the details that your guests will interact with for two or three hours. They are the things guests don’t consciously notice, but would feel the absence of.

When I design a table, I think about touch as much as sight. What does it feel like to set your hand on this linen? Is the glassware substantial enough to feel considered? Is the candle light warm or cool, and what does that do to the faces around the table?

A heavy glass feels considered. It tells the guest they are somewhere that has thought about them. A flimsy glass undermines everything around it, regardless of how beautiful the table looks in photos.

The same is true of cutlery. Not every event warrants sterling, and I’m not suggesting it does. But there is a floor below which the weight of a fork starts to communicate something the rest of the table contradicts.

I have seen strong events made stronger by the right linen and flat ones made flatter by the wrong one. The texture of the cloth, the way it drapes, whether it catches the candlelight or absorbs it — these are the conditions your guests’ hands will rest in for the entire evening.

A stiff, bright-white linen in a warm candlelit room creates a tension the guest will feel without being able to name it. A soft, slightly textured cloth in the same room reads as ease. As warmth. As the host saying: settle in, this is going to be good.

I think about the experience of sitting down. That first moment when a guest takes their seat and looks out across the table: what do they see? Is it beautiful? Is it clear? Does it feel like someone thought about them?

A centerpiece that is too tall breaks the table into isolated sections. Guests on one side can no longer see the guests across from them, and conversation collapses into pairs. A centerpiece that sits too low can make the table feel empty, unfinished.

The goal is for the table to feel full without feeling crowded. That’s the principle. Everything else is judgment.

The table is also where conversation lives. And conversation is what most people, if you ask them honestly, remember most about a celebration. Not the florals. Not the lighting. The person they were seated next to. The story that came up over the second course. The moment the whole table laughed at the same time.

Good table design doesn’t produce those moments. But it creates the conditions for them.

The last thing I adjust on any table, always, is the spacing.

Not just between settings, but between objects within a setting. The small distances matter. A glass placed too far from the plate feels careless. A place card centered just slightly off feels wrong in a way that is almost subliminal.

There is a version of a table that is technically correct and still feels off. Usually the problem is the space between things. Density, rhythm, the relationship between objects — these are the same principles that govern any good design.

A table is a composition. And like any composition, it lives or dies on the relationships between its parts, not on the parts themselves.

A table that is too crowded feels anxious. A table that is too sparse feels overlooked. A table that is just right disappears, and the conversation fills the space instead.

That is the goal.

I have designed intimate dinners for 12 and seated fundraisers for 700, and the principle is the same at every scale. The table is not decoration. It is infrastructure for human connection.

When I meet a new client and they describe the experience they want: warmth, elegance, ease, intimacy, I translate all of those words into table decisions before I translate them into anything else.

Because if you get the table right, the rest of the room tends to follow.

There’s a moment I’ve come to expect when I’m planning an event in a new country, and it usually happens early on, when everything still looks good on paper and we feel confident in the direction. Then something small doesn’t land the way we thought it would. A flow feels off, a detail doesn’t translate, or a conversation reveals that we’ve made an assumption that doesn’t quite hold up in this setting.

I’ve learned not to push past that moment or try to force the plan to work as-is, because more often than not it’s the first signal that we need to adjust. When we listen to it early, the entire event benefits.

How Working Around the World Has Changed How I Prioritize My Planning Tasks

After working across five continents, what’s changed most for me is how much weight I give to context. It shapes everything, whether we acknowledge it or not.

The first thing I prioritize now, before we get too far into planning, is having the right local partner in place. A strong DMC isn’t just helpful, it’s essential to doing this work well. They understand how things actually function on the ground, which can be very different from how things appear from the outside. They help navigate cultural nuance, communication styles, vendor relationships, and the kind of logistical details that only become visible once you’re in them. They’re also the people you can rely on when something unexpected happens, which it inevitably does. Having someone who knows how to solve those problems locally can make all the difference.

I’ve also moved away from the idea that there’s a universally successful event format. Something that feels seamless and engaging in one place can feel uncomfortable or ineffective somewhere else, because the way people engage is shaped by where they are. How they participate, how they move through a space, how they interpret timing or hierarchy, all of that shifts depending on the cultural context. When you try to replicate something without accounting for that, the experience can feel slightly off, even if everything looks right on paper.

That same idea applies to logistics, which are never as neutral as they seem. Decisions around transportation, signage, or check-in flow carry different expectations depending on the region, and when those expectations aren’t met, people notice quickly. It’s rarely one large issue, but rather a series of small moments that create friction where there should be ease.

Over time, I’ve also learned to stop assuming which norms are shared. Punctuality, networking styles, audience participation, communication preferences, food and beverage expectations, all of these vary more than we think based on where we are in the world. When you design without understanding those nuances, the event can still function, but it won’t feel as considered as it should. You can’t always know what you don’t know or might be missing, so bringing in a local expert can help smooth the path and make every detail feel that much more intentional.

What Matters More Than Getting Things Exactly Right From the Start

What’s become more important to me than getting everything exactly right is building in the flexibility to adjust as things shift. No matter how thorough the planning process is, something will change, whether it’s a timeline, a detail, or an unexpected variable. The goal isn’t to hold the plan together at all costs, but to respond in a way that preserves the overall experience. In many cases, the strength of an event comes from how well the team adapts in real time.

The Parts of an Event That Never Change

At the same time, there are a few things that feel remarkably consistent, no matter where I’m working. People want to feel welcomed in a way that feels clear and genuine from the moment they arrive. When someone understands where they are, what’s happening, and feels considered in the process, it sets a tone that carries through the entire experience.

Clear communication is another constant, particularly when people are navigating an environment that may not be in their primary language. When directions are easy to follow and expectations are well communicated, there’s a noticeable sense of relief, and that allows people to engage more fully.

What people remember most, across every location, is how the event felt. They remember whether it was easy to move through the day, whether transitions made sense, whether they ever had to stop and figure something out that should have been intuitive. Those smaller details, the ones that often go unnoticed when they’re done well, end up shaping the overall experience more than any single moment.

When something is disorganized, it stands out immediately, regardless of where you are. And when something is well-run, there’s a sense of ease that settles into the room, allowing people to be present without thinking about the mechanics behind it.

What I’ve Learned From Global Event Planning

Each event has informed how I approach the next one. I build in more communication than I think I’ll need, especially when we’re working across languages or cultural contexts. I spend more time upfront understanding local expectations so that we’re not adjusting reactively during the event itself. I’m careful about not repeating something simply because it worked somewhere else, and I design with enough flexibility to absorb the unexpected without disrupting the experience.

More than anything, I’ve come to see each event as part of an ongoing process of learning. The goal isn’t to create the same outcome every time, but to design something that feels appropriate to where you are and the people you’re gathering. When that alignment is there, the event feels natural, and that’s what makes it work.

There is a difference between producing an event in a new location and truly designing within a culture, and that distinction has shaped the way I approach my work after designing events in more than 20 countries across five continents.

Early in my international work, I learned that what succeeds in one place does not simply transfer to another. An event can be flawlessly executed from a logistical standpoint and still feel misaligned, because design isn’t just visual or operational. It’s cultural. It reflects values, rhythms, expectations, and unspoken social cues that are specific to place.

Working internationally has shown me that every culture has its own internal logic, feelings, and traditions around gathering, and those elements are not always visible at first glance. In some places, there’s a deep emphasis on ceremony and meaning, where every gesture and sequence carries weight. In others, there’s a quiet discipline around simplicity, where restraint is what signals thoughtfulness. And in many parts of the world, what reads as generous and engaging in one context can feel excessive or misplaced in another.

These differences are not aesthetic. They’re expressions of how people gather, what they value, and how they define hospitality.

Designing across cultures has required me to shift my posture. Instead of asking what will impress, my process begins with understanding what will feel appropriate and meaningful within that specific context. That means studying how people host, how they celebrate, how they move through space, and how they relate to one another in social settings. It also means recognizing that time itself is experienced differently depending on where you are, whether it is tightly structured or more fluid, and designing accordingly.

Over time, this has led to a consistent approach: listen first, design second.

That listening happens through local partners, artisans, producers, and collaborators who bring an inherent understanding of nuance. No amount of external expertise can replace that perspective. My role isn’t to impose a vision unchanged, but to shape it in conversation with the environment and the people who know it best.

This is where restraint becomes not just a preference, but a discipline.

There’s often an instinct, particularly in destination work, to amplify the experience, to make it feel elevated by adding more layers, more detail, more spectacle. But my experience has shown that the most successful events are often the ones that resist that impulse. They allow the setting to remain legible. They draw from what already exists rather than competing with it.

In practice, that might mean adjusting a design so it aligns with local expectations, rethinking how a meal unfolds to match cultural norms, or simplifying an environment so that it reflects the natural pace and tone of the place. These decisions are about doing what is right for that context.

When an event is designed this way, there is a sense of coherence that is difficult to manufacture otherwise. Guests may not be able to identify each individual choice, but they recognize that the experience feels considered, grounded, and in alignment with its surroundings.

That’s ultimately the measure of success in global work.

Designing across cultures isn’t about demonstrating range or proving adaptability. It’s about developing the judgment to know when to lead and when to step back, when to introduce something new and when to preserve what’s already there.

After more than two decades and work across five continents, that balance has become central to how I design. It’s what allows the work to feel distinct without ever feeling out of place, and why, no matter where in the world I am working, the goal remains the same: to create a sense of belonging through hospitality, connection, and the way people are brought together.

There was a period of time, longer than we probably realized, when everything in events became very efficient. Not better or more meaningful, just optimized.

Timelines tightened, guest counts grew, and everything became more visual and more produced. We started designing for what would photograph well and travel easily. Even the language shifted a little bit. Conversations around events began to sound more like production than hospitality, focused on scale and deliverables in a way that felt far from why most of us got into this work in the first place.

And somewhere in all of that, hospitality slipped. It happened gradually enough that it was easy to miss if you weren’t paying close attention.

Lately, though, I’ve been feeling it come back. Not in a dramatic way, but in the kinds of conversations I’m having and the way clients are thinking more carefully about their guests again.

To me, hospitality has never been about service alone. It’s not just what’s being passed or how precisely something is timed. Those details matter, but they’re not the point. What matters is how someone feels when they arrive, whether they understand where to go, and whether anything about the experience feels like it was actually considered with them in mind.

That’s the difference. It’s easy to impress someone, but making them feel genuinely taken care of requires a different level of attention.

For a while, the industry leaned heavily into spectacle, which made sense because it’s visible and it translates easily. But in many cases, the guest experience became secondary to the visual, and we stopped asking the simplest, most important questions: how does this feel when you walk in, what does someone need in the first few minutes, and where do they start to relax.

When those questions aren’t part of the process, you’re no longer really hosting, you’re doing something more like presenting.

The Focus is Shifting

What I’m seeing now is a shift back toward the guest. People aren’t asking for more, they’re asking for something that feels better and more considered.

There’s more attention to pacing, to comfort, and to how an experience unfolds over the course of an evening rather than how it looks in a single moment. Guests can feel the difference immediately. Now they’re more aware of it, and they respond to it in a much more direct way.

Hospitality is often treated like instinct, but in reality it’s something you practice. It requires intention, a certain level of discipline, and a willingness to think ahead of the moment you’re in. It’s about anticipating what someone might need before they ask, but also understanding when to hold back, because not every moment needs to be amplified.

In my own work, whether I’m in Chicago or working abroad, the approach is always the same. We don’t start with how something is going to look, we start with how it’s going to feel to be there. We think about how someone moves through a space, where they might pause, where they might stay longer than expected, and what makes the environment feel easy rather than overwhelming.

Those decisions end up mattering far more than anything purely decorative.

What I’m seeing now is a return to that way of thinking. Things feel a little quieter and more deliberate. Welcomes feel more personal, seating encourages connection rather than structure, and food is considered not just for presentation, but for timing and comfort.

The best events right now have a sense of ease to them. They don’t feel like they’re trying so hard.

I don’t think we’re moving away from beautiful design or ambitious ideas, but rather that we’re redefining what a successful event looks like.

It’s less about the single moment and more about how people experience the entire evening: Whether they stay longer than expected, whether conversations deepen, and whether they feel comfortable enough to actually be present.

That’s what people remember, not just what they saw, but how it felt to be there.

The thing that stands out to me most is how obvious it is when hospitality is working well. You can feel it in a room fairly quickly. People settle in, the energy softens, and conversations begin to happen more naturally.

That kind of atmosphere doesn’t come from one big decision, it comes from a series of smaller ones that are made early and carried through every part of the experience.

That’s the part of the work I find myself most drawn to now, not just creating something beautiful, but creating something people can actually experience.

For much of my career, luxury in events was defined by what you could see.

More layers. More production. More moments competing for attention. Bigger budgets often meant louder statements, and success was measured by how much was on display.

That definition began shifting long before the pandemic, but the last few years accelerated the change in ways the industry is still reckoning with.

When the world paused, the events and hospitality industries were forced to stop doing what they do best: bringing people together. In that absence, something else emerged. A renewed awareness of what gathering actually means, and what people miss when it’s taken away.

Connection became precious. Presence became rare. Experience became essential.

At the same time, the pandemic reshaped the luxury landscape entirely. Digital access expanded. Tools became more powerful. Knowledge that once took years to absorb was suddenly condensed, packaged, and shared at scale. Entire industries adapted out of necessity, and in many ways, that democratization was a gift.

But it also created the illusion of shortcuts.

Today, almost everything appears learnable overnight. Design trends. Production workflows. Hospitality language. The surface of luxury is easier than ever to replicate. You can study the visuals. Download the templates. Watch the recap videos. Follow the formulas.

What you can’t shortcut is experience.

There are parts of this work that can only be learned through time. Through repetition. Through being in the room when something goes wrong and knowing how to adjust without anyone noticing. Through understanding how people move through space, how energy shifts, how timing changes everything.

These are not skills you acquire quickly. They are developed quietly, over years of practice.

The pandemic created a generation of new voices in the events and luxury space, many of them talented, thoughtful, and creative. It also flattened perception. When everything lives online, it becomes harder to distinguish between what looks right and what actually works.

Experience-driven luxury is the antidote to that flattening.

True experience is not about excess or performance. It is about discernment. Knowing when to add and when to hold back. Understanding the emotional arc of a gathering. Designing for comfort, clarity, and connection, not just impact.

Hospitality sits at the center of this evolution.

Not hospitality as a script, but as an instinct. The ability to anticipate needs before they are voiced, to read a room, to create ease without explanation. That kind of hospitality is learned through years of paying attention to people, not just processes.

In modern events, luxury shows up in how seamless something feels. In the confidence of the design. In the restraint of the choices. In the way guests are guided without being managed.

It shows up in what doesn’t need to be said.

This moment in the industry calls for a recalibration. Not a return to old standards, but a deeper respect for the craft. For the time it takes to develop judgment. For the value of experience that cannot be downloaded or fast-tracked.

The future of events belongs to those who understand that experience isn’t a trend. It’s a responsibility.

It asks us to move more slowly. To design more thoughtfully. To honor the people we serve by creating environments that feel intentional, human, and grounded.

Luxury is no longer about how much you can show.

It’s about how deeply you can make people feel seen, cared for, and connected.

And that, more than anything, is learned over time.

I have always known Chicago as home.

Not just the city I grew up in, but the place that taught me how to notice details. How to read a room. How to move between polish and grit without losing either. Long before I worked in events, Chicago was shaping my perspective on scale, design, culture, and hospitality.

It’s the lens I return to, even after producing events around the world.

In the events industry, Chicago is often misunderstood. It’s sometimes described as practical. Or corporate. Or predictable. It’s treated as a secondary option rather than a destination in its own right.

That assessment could not be more incomplete.

Chicago is a city of architecture first. Of intention and proportion. Of spaces designed to make people feel something when they walk through the door. From historic landmarks to modernist icons to unexpected industrial conversions, the city offers a range of environments that rival any global destination.

It’s also a city that understands scale.

Chicago can hold a grand, sweeping moment just as effortlessly as it can support something intimate and deeply personal. You can host a thousand people without losing warmth. You can design a small gathering that still feels elevated and intentional. That flexibility is rare, and it matters.

What truly sets Chicago apart, though, is its culture.

This is a city that values substance. People here care about quality, craft, and experience without needing excess or performance. Hospitality is real, not rehearsed. There is pride in doing things well and doing them thoughtfully. That sensibility translates beautifully into events.

Accessibility is another quiet strength. Chicago is easy to get to, easy to navigate, and welcoming in a way that puts guests at ease. That ease creates space for connection. It allows people to be present. It removes friction, which is often the unseen enemy of meaningful experiences.

Producing events globally has only sharpened my appreciation for this city. Working across different countries and cultures gives you perspective. You learn what’s universal and what’s unique. You begin to recognize when a place has its own rhythm and identity rather than borrowing one.

Chicago does.

Its creative community is deep. Its vendor talent is exceptional. Its venues are layered with history and possibility. And its people bring a grounded energy that keeps experiences feeling human, no matter the scale.

For me, Chicago is not just a location to host events. It’s a collaborator in those events.

It influences how I think about storytelling, flow, and intention. It reminds me that luxury does not have to be loud. That design can be powerful without being precious. That celebration can feel elevated and approachable at the same time.

This city deserves a more nuanced conversation in the events world.

I want to offer that perspective, to share why Chicago continues to inspire me, to highlight the places, partners, and ideas that make it such a compelling setting for thoughtful gatherings.

I have spent more than two decades inside rooms built for celebration.

Some of them were grand. Some were quiet. Some were impeccably styled and some were held together with tape, trust, and a very good run of luck. All of them taught me something.

For most of my career, my job was to make the moment happen. To ensure the doors opened on time. That the lighting worked. That the food arrived hot. That people felt taken care of, even if they never noticed how much effort went into making that feel effortless.

This space is not about the logistics of that work. It is about everything that lives underneath it.

I am starting this Substack because, after 20-plus years in events, I have learned that the most meaningful parts of this work are rarely the ones we talk about publicly.

What makes a celebration land is not a checklist.

It is not a trend report.

It is not how many elements you layer into a room.

It is how the experience makes people feel, and whether that feeling lingers after the chairs are stacked and the music stops.

Celebration is a craft. And like any craft, it deserves thought, intention, and care.

Over the years, my role has evolved. I began with a background in interior design, psychology, and social work. That combination shaped how I see spaces and people from the very beginning. I was never just interested in how something looked. I wanted to understand how environments influence emotion, behavior, and connection.

Events are immersive by nature. They are temporary worlds. When done well, they invite people to slow down, to feel present, to connect more deeply with each other and with a shared purpose. That is where my work has always lived, at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and human experience.

As the founder of Clover Events and Productions, I partner with corporate, destination, and philanthropic clients who are not looking for spectacle alone. They are looking for clarity. They want their events to mean something. To support a goal. To reflect who they are and what they stand for.

That means my role often extends far beyond execution. It starts early, in conversations about why an event exists in the first place. What it is meant to communicate. Who it is meant to serve. How it should feel, not just how it should look.

Those early questions are where the real work begins.

This Substack is where I want to share that thinking, but also the lived experience behind it. The moments that do not make it into proposals or portfolios. The behind-the-scenes decisions, instincts, mistakes, and lessons that shape the final outcome.

I want this to be a creative outlet as much as a professional one. A place to share personal observations, stories from the field, advice I wish I had been given earlier, and the ideas I am still turning over in my head. Sometimes that will come from an event. Sometimes it will come from travel, cooking, reading, or simply paying attention to how people gather and connect.

I want to talk about what years in this industry teach you beyond timelines and floor plans. About leadership and responsibility. About hospitality as a philosophy, not a buzzword. About why restraint often creates more impact than excess.

I also want to talk about slowing down.

The events industry moves quickly, seemingly faster every year. Trends cycle through at an exhausting pace. There is constant pressure to do more, to go bigger, to reinvent everything each time. But some of the most powerful experiences I have witnessed were rooted in simplicity, clarity, and intention.

They worked because someone took the time to think.

This is a space for that kind of thinking.

I am not here to position myself as having it all figured out. I am here to share what I have learned, what I am still learning, and why I believe celebration matters more than we sometimes give it credit for.

At its best, celebration marks time. It brings people together. It acknowledges effort, transition, grief, joy, and possibility. It reminds us to pause and be present with one another.

That is not small work.
